Snails on a Begonia Plant

1 More than 1,000 begonia species belong to the family Begoniaceae. Gardeners often choose types of begonias known for their colorful, fragile foliage. Snails feed on the leaves of begonia plants.

Identification

  • The damage caused by snails on begonia plants may look similar to the effects of slugs and caterpillars. Close inspection of the undersides of leaves and the ground around the base of the plant should reveal the snails. Snails also leave a telltale silvery mucus trail on any surface they travel.

Prevention

  • Prevent snails on a begonia plant by removing dead leaves and other plant matter from the base of the plant. Dead leaves provide shelter for snails during the day. Other common locations for snails to retreat to include the undersides of wooden boards and rocks.

Solution

  • Apply a commercially available spray or bait to damp soil around the base of the affected begonia plant. Gardeners can also remove snails by hand. Watering in the late afternoon encourages snails to emerge after the sun sets, at which time they can be collected with the aid of a flashlight.
