How to Care for a Begonia X Tuberhybrida

images (1)

There are few plants for partial shade as lovely as begonia x tuberhybrida, or tuberous begonias, with their dark green leaves and delicate, brightly colored petals. Modern tuberous begonias come in a large variety of colors and have a wide diversity of form and size, some with frilled or ruffled petals and some with contrasting edge colors. But although they are widely grown, begonias are not the easiest plant for gardeners to care for.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you’ll need:
  • Begonia
  • Leaf mold or peat moss
  • Water
  • Fertilizer
  • Container for winter storage
    1. Plant in well-drained soil in a partially shaded area that is protected from the wind.
    2. Amend the soil with leaf mold or peat moss. Cover tubers with 1/2 inch of soil but do not cover with soil if planting from seed.
    3. Water frequently, but do not let the soil get soggy. In very dry climates, spray water overhead to dampen the air.
    4. Pinch the first flower buds from new plants to encourage bushiness.
    5. Feed your begonia monthly with a complete fertilizer after the plant is 3 inches high.
    6. Stop fertilizing before the first anticipated frost in the fall.
    7. Stop watering when leaves start to turn yellow and the stems begin to fall. Do not remove stems at this time.
    8. After the foliage is completely yellow, dig the tubers, wash off soil and remove stems.
    9. Dry the tubers in the sun for 3 to 4 days.
    10. Store tubers, covered with peat moss or sand, in a cool, dry, frost-free spot with temperature from 45 to 60 degrees.
    11. Begin dampening soil mixture three weeks before anticipated planting. After tubers have produced two leaves, plant in pots or in the garden after all danger of frost has past.

Tips & Warnings

  • If using a pot or container, allow 2 inches between sides of the tuber and the pot.

  • Excess fertilizer or water will cause the flowers to drop their buds.
