According to GardeningCentral.org, begonias are popular options for both indoor and outdoor home gardens. While there are more than 1,000 varieties of begonias, the most common homegrown begonias are wax and tuberous begonias.

Planting

  • According to BegoniaCare.net, begonias have shallow roots. Planting them too deeply will cause crown rot.

Climate

  • Grow begonias in warm areas, and plant them when frost season has ended. While begonias do need sunlight, exposing these flowers to midday sun is not recommended. BegoniaCare.net suggests growing begonias on the east side of a garden or home for optimum morning sunlight and shade from the hot afternoon sun.

Water

  • A begonia’s roots should never lie in standing water. BegoniaCare.net states that over exposure to moisture can cause the roots to mildew and rot or disintegrate.

Fertilizing

  • No mandatory rules for fertilizing begonias exist. BegoniaCare.net recommends the light use of a well-mixed fertilizer containing a small amount of cow manure. It is best to fertilize potted begonias after transplanting them.

Fun Fact

  • Begonia lovers can join the American Begonia Society (ABS). According to Begonias.org, ABS members receive exclusive tips on begonia care and registration, access to begonia magazines and newsletters, and information on annual begonia conventions and conservation.
