How to Propagate a Begonia Angel Wing

4

Angel wings are begonias that grow from cane-like stems up to 2 to 3 feet in height. They love good lighting, southern exposure and humidity. They should be watered moderately, keeping the upper inch of crust dry. Angel wings require pruning of old canes to promote new growth and blooms. Take your cuttings after pruning and try to grow them. If properly cared for, this man-made hybrid should bloom all year round.

Instructions

things you’ll need:
  • Peat and perlite
  • 4-inch pot
  • Plastic bag
  • Rubber band
    1. Cut a 4- to 5-inch stem using pruning shears. Cut under the growth node. This is a raised area on the stem that looks like a bump. This is where the roots will come from.
    2. Place the cutting in a mixture of peat and perlite in a small 4-inch planting pot. Use your finger to make a 2-inch hole in the soil to place your cutting in.
    3. Water the plant until water comes out the bottom of the plant.
    4. Cover the pot with a plastic bag to keep the pot moist and humid. Secure bag with rubber band.
    5. Place in indirect sunlight or under a florescent light.
    6. Fertilize the plant lightly with a starter fertilizer to promote root growth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Angel wings do not like extreme temperatures, so find a cool window. Too hot of an area will dry the soil out too fast and the plant will burn.
