How to Get Cane Begonias to Bloom

tải xuống (1)

Cane begonias are often said to look like bamboo with flowers because of the knobby joints up and down the stalk of the plant. Green leaves and clusters of small, delicate and brightly colored blooms are also hallmarks of cane begonias. These relatively easy to grow plants can be grown indoors and out. As long as basic conditions are met, you will be rewarded nearly continuously with colorful blooms.

Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you’ll need:
  • Clay pot
  • Potting soil
  • Garden hand shovel
  • Watering can
    1. Fill your heavy clay pot with potting soil. Using clay is important, as it is heavy enough to withstand growing a tall plant, such as cane begonias. If you do not have a clay pot, you may use a plastic pot with heavy rocks in the bottom to aide in stability.
    2. Free the root bulb of your cane begonia from its original container and shake a good bit of the soil off of the bottom of the root ball.
    3. Place your begonia deep into your clay pot, moving the soil around it until it feels stable. Planting the roots deeply encourages growth and blooming. Water liberally with your watering can, ensuring that the pot is well-drained.
    4. Set your pot of cane begonias in a sunny area to encourage blooming. Many cane begonias that refuse to bloom do so because of lack of sunlight.
    5. Water your cane begonias when the soil feels dry at least an inch down. Over-watering your plant will cause it to yellow and refuse to bloom.
    6. Pinch off old blooms at the base as they fade. This will encourage the plant to continually produce new blooms.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cane begonias can be wintered over outside in areas that do not frost. If you live in an area that frosts, you will need to bring your plant inside and provide it with plant lights to help keep it healthy until the following summer.
