How to Care for Angel Begonias

images (8)

Angel begonias, also known as angel-wing begonias, usually are grown as flowering houseplants. Unlike the tuberous begonia that is planted in the garden, angel begonias have cane-like stems and are prized as much for their foliage as for their flowers. Angel begonias earn their name from their large, variegated leaves that are thought to resemble angel wings. In their natural environment, these plants can reach up to 10 feet tall, but they rarely grow this large when grown in the home.

Instructions

things you’ll need:
  • Potting soil
  • Fertilizer
    1. Plant angel begonias in a rich, well-draining potting soil that contains compost or peat moss.
    2. Place the begonias in an area that receives at two to four hours of direct sunlight, preferably in the morning. Place them in a south- or east-facing window, as these areas usually provide the proper amount of light, even in winter.
    3. Water the angel begonias when the top 1-inch of the soil begins to feel dry. Water from the top until the excess moisture drains from the bottom of the pot. Wait 30 minutes to one hour for the soil to stop draining, then empty the drip tray under the pot.
    4. Pinch off the top ΒΌ to 1 inch of the tips of each growing stem on the begonias when they begin actively growing in spring.
    5. Fertilize begonias once monthly with a general purpose houseplant fertilizer or one that is slightly nitrogen-rich, such as 10-5-5 analysis fertilizer. Follow the label instructions for the specific brand for fertilization rates and methods.

Tips & Warnings

  • In winter when the home is drier than usual, provide humidity to the begonias by placing them on top a small dish of pebbles and water. This is only necessary if the leaf edges begin browning or yellowing.

  • Angel begonia pots can be set outdoors in summer when there is no frost danger. Use them to add color and interest to patios and other seating areas.

  • Angel begonia requires fertilizing only in spring and summer when it is actively growing.

  • Do not place the begonias in areas near drafts from doors or air vents. This dries out the soil and foliage too quickly and can damage the plants.
