Rex begonias are desirable for their large, colorful leaves. They come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors and are often grown inside due to their warmth and humidity requirements. Rex begonias can be propagated by seed, but they also easily reproduce by cuttings. In fact, the leaf or stem of rex begonias will take root quite easily, according to the University of Florida’s website, producing a new plant within a few months.

Instructions

things you’ll need:
  • Rex begonia leaf
  • Gardening shears
  • Shallow tray
  • Potting soil or peat moss
  • Water
  • Plastic bag
    1. Remove the petiole. This is the thin stem that protrudes from the base of the leaf.
    2. Cut large leaves into sections shaped like wedges. Leave small leaves alone.
    3. Fill a shallow tray with damp peat moss or potting soil. Then, press the edge of the leaf into the planting medium at a 45 degree angle.
    4. Loosely cover the tray and leaf with a plastic bag to increase humidity. Keep the soil moist, and place the leaf in a warm, bright location.
    5. Watch for plantlets (baby begonias) to develop along the leaf. Once these plantlets develop roots, they can be removed from the leaf and planted in their own pot or location.
