Longtime Bexar AgriLife Extension agent transfers to Callahan County

BAIRD – Jerry Warren will assume the duties as the Texas AgriLife Extension Service agent for agriculture and natural resources in Callahan County effective Sept. 1.

The joint announcement was made by Callahan County Judge Roger Corn and Scott Durham, AgriLife Extension administrator at San Angelo.

Warren is transferring from Bexar County, where he’s been the AgriLife Extension agent for agriculture, due to budget cuts that led to the loss of that position, Durham said.

“We are very pleased that Jerry is transferring to Callahan County,” Durham said. “He has a strong desire to help agriculture and the knowledge needed to make it happen. His wisdom and knowledge of AgriLife Extension work will be a real asset not only to the county but to our 23-county district as well.”

Warren holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Sam Houston State Teachers College, now Sam Houston State University.

A farmer and rancher for almost 30 years, Warren’s career with AgriLife Extension began in 1997 in Upton County. He later moved to Terry County before taking the Bexar County position.

Some of his accomplishments while in Bexar County included providing educational outreach and technical assistance to area farmers and ranchers, supporting youth 4-H livestock projects, and implementing a countywide agriculture literacy program.

Warren is familiar with Callahan County because of his past experience as a peanut farmer and cattle rancher in nearby Eastland and Comanche counties.

“Much of the area has changed since then,” he said. “There’s more small grains, forage and livestock activity in Callahan and surrounding counties than when I was there. But I hope my experience as both a farmer and rancher in that region, as well as experience gained as an agricultural agent in other parts of the state, will be of help to the agricultural community in that area.”
