Water hyacinth is an invasive aquatic weed that can be found on five continents around the world. The floating weed grows best in slow-moving water and may grow as high as 3 1/2 feet high. The purple-blue flowers create hundreds of seeds, which help water hyacinth spread quickly. The flowers may create a dense mat on the water, preventing other plant growth and the movement of aquatic crafts through the water. Removing water hyacinth is the best way to get rid of this invasive plant.

Instructions

things you’ll need:
  • Rake
  • Foliar spray
    1. Loosen water hyacinth from the water using a rake, dragging the spines across the soil where the flowers have rooted.
    2. Remove water hyacinth by hand, digging roots from the bottom of the water and pulling the plant out in its entirety. Collect all scraps of the plant, if possible, to prevent future water hyacinth from blooming.
    3. Introduce Neochentine eichhorniae and N. bruchi Hustache, two types of weevils, to the water ecosystem. Weevils are beetles that feed on and kill water hyacinth. The insects have been released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for control of the aquatic weed, but you should check with your state department of agriculture to make sure it’s legal to use weevils in your area.
    4. Apply foliar spray containing glyphosate or copper directly to water hyacinth with caution. Herbicides may have an adverse effect on other plant and animal life in and near the water.
    5. Check with your local department of agriculture before applying any chemical compounds to the water, particularly if the water flows into other waterways.
