As soon as the Southern land of Viet Nam was completely liberated, the Offshore Fisheries Research Institute was taken over and renamed as The Sub-Institute of Marine Fisheries No. 1 by the Decision 219 HS/QĐ of the Ministry of Marine Fisheries on December 22, 1976. In 1979, the Sub-Institute of Marine Fisheries No. 1 changed to new name as the Sub-Institute for Fisheries Research No. I. Its main function at that period was to carry out the research and development of aquaculture in the Southern plains of . In 1983, the Sub-Institute for Fisheries Research No. I was upgraded as the Research Institute for Aquaculture No. 2 by the Decision of the Council of Ministers.

The Research Institute for Aquaculture No. 2 (RIA2) is a scientific and technological Institution for aquaculture research and development of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Its main office located in Ho Chi Minh City . The RIA2’s responsibility areas of RIA2 cover all provinces of North-East of Southland and the Mekong Delta.

Since its foundation, RIA2 has been cooperating and taking part in training on fields of fisheries with several home research institutes and universities. RIA2 has established a close relationship in research cooperation with international organizations, scientific institutions, universities such: ACIAR, AKVAFORSK, AIT, HAKI, DANIDA, WORLD FISH CENTER , MRCS, NACA, SEAFDEC, SIPPO, DFID, WB,  AUBURN, GENT, LIVERPOOL, STIRLING , BEN GURION, WAGENINGEN, UMB, QUT,…
